Set Designer / Designer-Maker Opportunity
Pocklington Arts Centre is seeking a Set Designer / Designer-Maker for its 2026 Christmas production, a new festive family show written by Elizabeth Godber.
We are looking for an imaginative and practical designer to develop the set concept and design for the production, and to lead on the build / construction of the set in collaboration with the PAC team.
The role also includes designing a small foyer installation linked to the wider PAC Christmas programme and themed around the world of Christmas fairies, helping extend the visual identity of the production beyond the stage and into the audience’s arrival experience.
The ideal candidate will be a strong visual storyteller with experience of designing for live performance, and the practical skills to realise a set within the scale and budget of a small-to-mid-scale producing venue.
Fee: £1,400 total
- £800 design fee, concept development, design meetings and final set design
- £600 build / construction fee, set build and construction labour
Role includes:
Developing the set concept and overall visual world of the production in collaboration with PAC team, and with Elizabeth Godber.
- Attending design / production meetings with the writer, director and PAC team
- Producing a final set design suitable for the scale and technical requirements of PAC
- Designing a small foyer installation connected to the production and wider Christmas offer
- Sourcing or specifying materials within budget
- Building / constructing the set, either independently or with agreed support
- Liaising with PAC staff regarding installation
We are looking for someone with:
- Experience of set design for theatre or live performance
- Strong visual and practical design skills
- The ability to work imaginatively within a modest budget
- Experience of making / constructing scenic elements, line with health & safety requirements
- Good communication and collaborative working skills
Key dates:
- Initial design meetings: w/c 5 October and w/c 12 October
- Final design sign-off: by Friday 30th October
- Build period: 2–13 November
- Foyer installation complete by: w/c 16th November / ready for Christmas Market on 21 November
- Set installed for rehearsals from: w/c 6th - 8th December onwards
